The power windows in your car rely on control mechanisms inside your doors and a central fuse. Like any system, this can sometimes fail, causing one or more of your windows to stop working right. Sometimes, a window fails completely - it won't open or close at all, or it moves erratically. Other times, the window only works some of the time.
If you have periodic problems with a power window, then you might not worry about the problem. When the window works, you forget about the problem. However, a faulty power window is a problem you shouldn't ignore. Why should you have the window fixed sooner rather than later?
1. You Might Have an Accident
A window that doesn't work all the time can become a hazard. Your car's windows are a key safety feature, and it's important that they are all fully operational.
For example, if your window has periods when it is fully closed or fully open, then you may not be comfortable in the car. If you're worried about being too cold or too hot, then you can't focus on driving. Or, if you keep moving around to avoid rain coming in through an open window, then you might take your eye off the road and crash.
A malfunctioning window also has potential dangers for your passengers. If a window doesn't immediately open or close, then you may get used to the wait. However, if a passenger doesn't know this, then they might stick their head out of the window when it is open only for it close on them when it starts working again.
Plus, if you have a bad crash, then your window may be your only exit point. If your door is smashed in, it might not open; you might need to get out through the window. If your window sticks at this point, then you can't use it as an escape route.
2. You Can't Keep Your Car Secure
If you can't fully close a window in your car, then your vehicle isn't secure. If the window is all the way down, it becomes an easy access point. Even if the window sticks and stops just before it closes, any gap is enough for someone to force it down.
If you can't park your car somewhere secure like a garage or secure parking lot, then an open window won't be safe. Someone could break into the car and steal your possessions; they could even make off with the car itself.
If someone breaks in through the malfunctioning window, your insurance provider won't look kindly on your claim. They'll take the view that you should have had the window repaired.
3. You Want to Keep Your Repair Costs Low
If your power window works some of the time, then it hasn't completely broken down. You may just have a simple problem like a dirty seal that makes the window stick or dirt under the control switch that stops it from working fully. Fix the problem, and the window should operate like new again.
If you don't fix the problem quickly, then you could end up with a higher repair bill. For example, if you leave something stuck under a window's control switch, then it could damage the switch's electrical contacts. In the end, you might need to replace the switch if it fails completely, costing you more money.
