How to Protect a Broken Car Window Before Repair

websitebuilder • Jan 09, 2017

If your car window breaks, you usually want to get it to the repair shop immediately. However, that may not always be an option. Here are some important steps you can follow to protect your broken car window.

Clean the Broken Glass

You want to make sure that there are no pieces of broken glass left in your car, since someone may accidently step on the glass or press their elbow or hand on the pieces, injuring themselves. Large pieces can typically be removed by hand. However, it is crucial to wear thick gloves while doing so to protect yourself. A vacuum can be used to gather small pieces of shards that are often not noticeable to the naked eye. It may also be helpful to vacuum your whole car multiple times to make sure that every piece of glass is removed.

Cover the Window

You will usually need to protect your car from the elements when driving. Packing tape can usually accomplish this. The packing tape should be placed on the frame of the broken window from the inside in order to protect the paint of the car. The direction of the tapes typically need to be placed vertically and should overlap in order for water to not get inside your car if it rains.

Even if you can’t get to the repair shop right away, protecting a broken car window can prevent further damage. Call Perfection Auto Glass in Greenwood at 317-893-2232 to learn more about car window repairs.
