The Difference Between Laminated and Tempered Glass

websitebuilder • Mar 09, 2017

Your vehicle is covered with glass that allows you to observe your surrounding as you drive. There are two types of auto glass, laminated and tempered, and each one is used for different parts of the car.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is typically stronger than tempered glass. Its strength is because it’s made up of three layers. There are two layers of tempered glass with a layer of a special type of plastic in between. This extra layer keeps the glass from shattering on impact.
Because of its durability, laminated glass is usually required by law to be used for the windshield of the car. Using strong glass for the windshield can be extremely important, since shattered glass can fly straight into the driver and passenger’s faces, seriously injuring them.

Tempered Glass

If the glass on the side or back of the car is damaged, it can be problematic. However, it is usually not as dangerous as the windshield breaking. For this reason, tempered glass is normally used for these locations. Tempered glass is still generally stronger than other types of glass, however, due to the rapid heating and cooling procedure, called tempering that fortifies the glass. While tempered glass may not be as strong as laminated glass, it’s still usually much stronger than the glass on most furniture.

Laminated and tempered glass can add to the safety of your vehicle. Call Perfection Auto Glass in Greenwood at 317-893-2232 to learn more about these different types of glasses used for your car.
